When global medical manufacturer Becton Dickinson (BD) announced ambitious plans to expand its Plymouth facility, competition for the £65 million project was fierce. Local firm Haldons Torquay, alongside three Plymouth-based businesses, sought to differentiate their bid through a compelling narrative that showcased their deep-rooted passion for Plymouth’s economic and community development.
Working closely with Maria from Haldons, who was pivotal in coordinating the project, a dynamic and emotive video was created, putting the spotlight firmly on the strengths and dedication of the local teams involved. Unlike their main competitor from Liverpool, the bid highlighted genuine local commitment, expertise, and enthusiasm for driving forward Plymouth’s prosperity.
The video, illustrating the collaborative strength and community-driven ethos of the four local companies, resonated deeply with decision-makers at BD. Maria, now retired after her successful career and the subsequent buyout of Haldons, later emphasised that the video was instrumental in tipping the scales in their favour.
The successful bid paved the way for a substantial expansion at BD’s Roborough facility, a site critical for producing high-volume blood collection tubes and needle products, essential for both UK and global markets. Driven by increasing NHS demand, BD had experienced significant financial growth, with UK sales soaring to over £306 million and profits rising dramatically to £26.6 million.
This project not only highlights the significance of strategic storytelling in securing major contracts but also underscores the positive impact of keeping business local. By convincingly demonstrating genuine local commitment and capability, Haldons Torquay and their Plymouth partners secured a transformative project that benefits the entire Plymouth community and economy for years to come.
